"But beef for what?"

Homeboy Sandman
Peace & Love
Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent

I just can't get enough of Homeboy Sandman these days. On Sunday, he's bringing his talents to the Bean. Can't wait!

Off his most recent album this track, Peace & Love, stands out for so many reasons.

The song is structured in four verses. Each verse repeats the previous one while adding a new set of bars at the end. Every single line has an end rhyme of the "uh" sound. All of the verses have the same flow except the last two. Verse three has the same flow as the others except his voice becomes slightly distorted. The fourth and final verse has even more distortion. The flow remains the same but Boy Sand changes his voice inflection-giving the words and overall message a sense of urgency.

And that's just the structure.

I haven't even said anything about the deft wordplay and invaluable message.

This cut certainly will not deepen any cuts.

...Peace and love
Praising and raising the piece enough
Please enough
Ironically, arms ain't ways of reaching up
Yards where cats is beefing up
To keep from getting beaten up
But beef for what? (uh)

...Peace and love
Praising and raising the piece enough
Please enough
Ironically, arms ain't ways of reaching up
Yards where cats is beefing up
To keep from getting beaten up
But beef for what?
Obviously retreating is treasonous
But treaties and teaming up
Aren't nearly as tedious
As hunting the genus of
Geniuses Nefertiti and Tut
That's who we were once
That was we and us
...Son

It's no wonder why we in ruts
Seems we be in a rush just for being tough
And rather would keep it tucked than keep in touch (uh)

It's gotten deeper 'cause
It's become custom playing cuts that'll deepen cuts
Like being your brother's keeper won't be as much fun
