Vomitspit - Billy Woods

Billy Woods
A Mis Enemigos
History Will Absolve Me

"When them other niggas jumped ship, we kept it Amistad
Still ended up in front of a white judge, praying to god"

Mr. Woods on the Middle Passage, African Diaspora, and what happened to those who couldn't... didn't jump ship. Well crafted.

Camay - Homeboy Sandman

One late night at work 3 years ago there were only four people in the building, me, two female co-workers and the night custodian. One of my colleagues came to my classroom and asked if I was planning on leaving any time soon. I told her yes, but that the night custodian was still there. I don't remember her response but I could sense that she was still leery of being there. I didn't understand her hesitance. To me, the night custodian was harmless. Just as I was attempting to make sense of her unease, my other colleague walked into the room and was posed with the same question. Before she could even mention not wanting to be there with just the custodian the second colleague almost finished her sentence. It was like she knew exactly what she was feeling. They shared a giggle and left. I left. It took me a while to understand what they understood.

Vomitspit - Talib Kweli

"Never looked up to see the stars in all their heavenly glory
Just straight ahead cause the peripheral is buildings with mad stories (story's)" - Talib Kweli, Good Mourning

Talib on how difficult it is to see a way out...figurative and literal...

Double Entendre - J. Cole

On the song Dollar and a Dream II from the Warm-Up Cole manged to put together a metaphor that it took me a bit to decipher. The first two verses are dope but they are straightforward in their point. It is the last verse where young Simba gets a little clever.

Not bad young, man not bad at all. However since he signed with a major label we can look forward to less of this and more of the B.S...nice job president Carter (smh).

Anyway, as I sit and face impending calls from a person who played a similar role in my life I can certainly relate.

Read and listen to the whole song but really LISTEN to the third verse. BTW, the ad libs are priceless!

Can't Knock the Hustle - Jay-Z

Sean Carter doing what Sean Carter does, when motivated, on the mic.

"The Game's fucked up
Nigga's beats is banging, nigga your hooks did it
Your lyrics didn't your gangster look did it..."

Typical Jay double meaning. Taking a shot at The Game, and the game (the rap game) itself. The two following lines certainly can be applied to the state of hip-hop music, and perhaps to  Jayceon Taylor. They were, after all engrossed in a battle around the time of this album.
