Then welcome to the cinema
A shot of wheat grass and an enema

Vomitspit/Triple Entendra - Talib Kweli

"I got the recipe for rest in peace
I never ran but I'm looking soo presidential
I still command you to arrest the chief

"Free" style - Beanie Sigel

"For truth it is what it is that's what the streets made me
Shoulda played Big but it's all Gravy"

"When I kick-in that door
Waving the four-four
Broad Street bully hard like wood floors
I'm harder than the yard after four
I bang like D Howard on the boards
look, weak ass cowards can't afford
to f**k with this n***a heart colder than a whores"

This could have been posted under Delivery, Vomitspit or Flow, just to name a few. While I wish I could hear Max B's lyrics, you can still get a sense of his flow.

"Free" style - Joe Budden

"These MC's is lame
I'm tryna to be a MC wit Brains
These n****'s is MC Brains" -Joe Budden

Needless cheap shot at Mr Oochie Coochie aside (certainly not to be confused with THE hoochie coochie man), this entire "free"style is dope. Joe's insecurity. Styles P's comments. The groups awkward silent moments. Joe's rhyme. The groups reaction to his rhyme. I love it all.

"I figured out why men try us
cuz we o.d'd on rims and thin tires
For that we Len Bias"

Dante Smith describing his writers process.

I remember my high school Spanish teacher Mrs Aguilar giving me a look of disgust whenever I would call her Mrs "Agallah". Granted, I was being a wise ass but I was sorta giving a shot out to Angel Aguilar aka 8 Off -Agallah, aka Agallah the Don Bisop.

Any dude who has been at it for as long as he has, and been ripping mics, producing, and in the mix with such a large cross section of MC in the history of the genre deserves a post. From EPMD, to Smooth Da Hustlah , to Sean Price, to The Diplomats, ...Mr Aguillar keeps it Hip-Hop. Nice to see him still at it.

Voice, flow, swag and presence

I know he is not that nice on this joint but it gave an excuse to post more Sean Price. P!

BTW, that Purple City tape was slept on...check for it.

"...but don't be alarmed I rap I don't bite...

, you or your rhymes I write my own, Tyrannosaurus Rex on the microphone - T-Rex

My 5 year old has been on musical hyperdrive since she was born. Indie and classic rock, blues, good pop, gospel, and select hip hop.  I have never been a fan of "childrens music" because most of it, is, well, just bad music. That was before I was made aware of the Dino-5! (Late pass...they been out since 08!)

I was reading an interview with the legendary Prince Paul who was going to spin at a club downtown that night. In passing, the interviewer mentioned his recent projects including one that was "a kids hip-hop album". I downloaded right away and was more than pleased.

The group consists of Chali 2na (Jurrasic 5 ) Scratch (The Roots), Wordsworth, and Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets). The album had guest appearances from poet Ursula Rucker and De La Soul.

I don't want to get into a review because this is a hip-hop lyrics blog after all. I selected the song, "What about Ten", because it is just sooo hip-hop. Each rhyme sayer gets their 9 cracks at coming up with some phrase that goes along with numerals one through nine. They tie up the final verse by each taking their turn at matching the number.

Good stuff, call and response and all of that ish you backpack purists love.

BTW,

A week after letting my daughter hear this, we were in the G Ride and she just starts spitting straight fire for like 20 minutes straight. She was 4 at the time. I mean, I didn't even have anything inspiring playing. She just starts going on and on about her cousin, and her being her best friend and all kinds of random ish.  Lots of repetition but she was riding the beat. Now, it's not like Dino-5 is the first hip-hop she has heard but they may have sparked something...it was sorta scary...

Liner Notes

Rappers need to start leaving a written record of their lyrics, so that years down the line lyrical archeologist have a clear record of their intent. There are a number of "credible" sites with lyrics as a focus, however completely miss the mark with their interpretation and or dictation. I end up spending so much time editing and revising, that I realize I should have just typed them up myself...which I am far too lazy to do. The job of getting them right is just so daunting. First you have to have an ear for the type of flow, then you also have to be somewhat abreast on the slang and colloquialisms of the time and region of the artists. Depending on the emcee, you have to have some current event, history, and general worldly knowledge.

I will acknowledge that there are a number of ill lyricists for which this is not an issue (see straight forward, paint-by-numbers type of rappers. However there are many others who play with words, meanings, and annunciation so often that it makes it next to impossible to decipher. There are also times when it is clear that the authors intent is to intentional blur or meld sounds together so as to give the illusion of a homonym, but actually creating an entire new word all together

I am also beginning to wonder is some of these are even meant to be written down. I mean, I am operating under the assumption that these lines and phrases are written down. It could be that these masters of language use them because of how they sound...with no intention of how it could or should be written down. Hell, maybe it doesn't matter, and if that is their intent, then that is cool too. It just makes written documentation more difficult for fans and historians alike.

It is also clear that artists and fans alike get pissed when they are not quoted correctly, so why not just end all of the guess work write them up for us.

Breath Control - Twista

Note: This could easily have been categorized under "Flow".

Delivery - 2Pac

Note: Trying to find a song where Pac doesn't have ill delivery is incredibly difficult.

I Got a Story to Tell - Biggie

This song, Drama, off Ghostaface's dope Apollo Kids, has a few surprises. One surprise is the verse from The Game. While I have tried on more than one occasion I simply have not been able to get with dude. He does a pretty god  job on the last leg of this lyrical relay. Notably absent from his verse are the almost compulsive d*** riding name dropping. Another surprise is that Shaolin's favorite griot got renegaded, on a story telling track no less!

What is less surprising however is the fact that Joell Ortiz puts forth another strong vocal performance. He dances on this sinister beat with precision. Joell paints a picture of a day when he happens to run into the man who murdered his cousin playing in a local softball game. The rest of the day is filled with sinister ("Nice play, just too bad it's your last"), humorous ("faggot n**** hopped in a Liberty, fake Range Rover) and mix of innocence and criminal ("Dollar icy from Papi with the scraper glock with the laser") Joell successfully does all of this while maintaining his stellar, 88' infused delivery.

Read while listening...

It was the night before he got popped
Big jars of haze Cheech and Chong bong in the spot
Tropicana strawberries diced bananas the long dookie fifth
Next to the Town House crackers Madden on 2008 a G a game
I'm Ron O'Neil the love seat sunk deep
Lil n****s bussin off they punk heat
I'll make a massacre try to rob one of my donkeys
But I ain't wettin that
I don't wanna send nobody back violate me take a nap
Promise you got something Lord that will honor you
Blow your lil head off while you're tying your shoe
But back in the kitchen Pyrex's
Occupied by the twins bank robbers with large records hard vests’s
86 ?????? on Benetton rugbies and frames that fake guns when they robed Sha Born
To them that's natural actual play the sqid-dod we gettin at you
And we don't want to rap to you
It's not Kosher
It's not a code of La Costra Nostra to roast ya I get a littlel closer
Rock you to sleep like “i got these little b****es come over”
Hoping you falll for the bait thinking you safe

Trying my best not to pop yet but the trop is major
Shot my lil cuz I do my aunt the favor watch this

Get a doughnut urge and just splurge you got the nerve to play third
In a softball tournament round my way say that's your word you bird
I'll put your beak on a curb but anyway
Looks like a good game the pigs ain't leaving so i'm a lay
Nice play just too bad it's your last
Couple bundles of D and 200 cash to sack you in the grass
I watch the teams line up ,shake hands, guess the games over
Faggot nikka hopped in a Liberty, fake Range Rover
I'm on his tail like Sonic little shorty palming on a 40
Broad day I'm trying to dodge a cover story
Look like he stopping for gas I'm a pluck him yay
This had to be his most unlucky lucky day
2 brothers come out of 7 Eleven in army wear and stand there
I’m acting like my tires need air
He closed the gas cap too many things going his way
So I just stashed that ya'll probably think I'm bugging but hey
I know them games in Lindsay Park is every Sunday he ain't going nowhere
I went home switched gear went out and grabbed me a beer
10 drinks later I'm at Burger King window for a Whopper
Look left and see partner
