Vomitspit - Blu

Blu

"So pardon if I'm coming off stealth
It's probably really hard for you to see me
Sea-weeds and we out floatin through the ocean no help
Puttin a genius in a bottle for a genie to read me
The President opened the message
It said don't push us, we close to the edges
...In red ink script to the edges
Thick from the blood that everyone of us shedded
And still aint none of us collected
Cuz niggas got their hands held to tight too accept it"

Blu on how dope he is, resilience of the people, and clinging on to prayer.

"...Anyway that's how I seen it...."

Unsettling. Disconcerting. I'm trying to find the words that describe how i felt after hearing I'm dead, by Scarface off of his debut solo album the Mr Scarface is Back.

Not sure what it us that made me have an emotional reaction to this track. Brad Jordan certainly was no stranger to dealing with morbid topics.

It may be the beat. It has a breezy vibe to it. Heavy D used it to brag about how attracted women were to him. And I'm certain The Meters didn't have death on their mind while crafting it. Other emcees might have chosen to use it as a backdrop for a more festive tale. Not Scarface.

"I’m sorry, just young and had to choose between you..."

"...and what the rest of the world might offer me, shit what would you do?" -Andre 3000

Single parents are universally celebrated for doing the work of two parents. The other parent, usually the father is ridiculed for being a "deadbeat". Many different factors lead to these situations. Most don't bother to think about the nuance of each situation. My mom used to tell the story of her dad going to the store for a bottle of milk one day and never returning home. Gone off for greener pastures perhaps. Could one really rationalize this decision?

Vomitspit - Willie The Kid

"Warfare like a Terracotta Soldier
Gun powder, Ticonderoga"

West Michigan's finest with an exquisite 'pencil-to-paper,words-as-a-weapon' simile. This kid has quite the skill set.

Like I tell my students, Ticonderoga pencils get it done.

Skinny Boyz

I was happy to find that a television show used Jockbox by the Skinny Boys as their theme song. Despite my feelings about the corporatizing of hip-hop culture and music, old heads like me still feel validated in these instances. Besides, Workaholics is smart and funny.

"...I said um....I'd rather read to my son
Than write another song about my gun
I'd rather not sit, what I could say
Cuz the lord, has a way, of protecting, the truth that's coming out, anyway..."

I have been sitting on a Willie The Kid post for a while now. I was hoping to have it be my first but I haven't been able to pull it together. This will be the first now. West Michigan's finest.

"What's in the Stew if the Flu's in the Chicken?" -Dead Prez

Access to healthy food for the poor, black and brown is and issue here in America. I have posted about healthy eating before, but with the recent coverage of the N.Y. Times report on the science of junk food and the criminals behind it, I figured it was a good time to highlight songs, verses and lines about just that topic.

"What's in the stew if the flu's in the chicken?" will become a reoccurring post, and this is the first.

Dead Prez often remark on healthy eating in their music. This one is hidden at the end of a bonus track from their most recent album. It's more about healthy habits in general. Dope still. The quotes below are from the first verse and the second verse is posted in full.

"Raised in the ghetto, singing songs – called survival
But eating soul food to have you dead on arrival"

"Break out of jail but can you break out a sickle cell?
We say we livin well, but we living in hell"

"We glued to the TV screen, commercials in-between
Crack Donalds, Murda King
What happened to eat your greens?
Eatin some or anything, abusing Mary Jane
Chinese chicken wings, everyday hood thing
5 Hour Energy, Red Bull and Hennessey
Head bobbin but the organs full of toxicity
Pack a Kool menthol, nicotine pit fall
They have the nerve to put "Kool" on the pack so they can trick y’all
Slave to the Dutch Master, colon cancer victim
Tell you on the  package but we still blame the system
No squares in my circle, screw all that sippin purple
I’m tryina live to my potential, age is just a number
A G preserve his temple, a G control his temper
No discipline, you slippin, no toxins in my kitchen
Slavery is over cousin, but then at lunch it wasn’t
If food is the last plantation then I’m Harriet Tubman
Advocating colonics, saving my lungs from chronic
But you can’t free a slave unless he knows he’s in bondage
(You wanna get freaky? Let’s go)
You can’t free a slave unless he knows he’s in bondage"

Vomitspit - Stic. Man of Dead Prez

Dead Prez
No Way As The Way
Information Age

"They say you’re not supposed to question God
Well is it okay to question the pastor?
Was it passed down from the slave-master?
It was only the truth I was after
But I never could get a straight answer
So I couldn’t relate to the sermon
Put down the bible, then I start learning
About life, didn’t know where the path would lead
But I had to get off my knees"

Stic.Man on spirituality and being liberated from organized religion.

"Come Back Like Jordan Wearin the 4-5" -Action Bronson

Wu - Tang Clan x Action Bronson x Terminology

Meteor Hammer
Legendary Weapons

"I was born to rep, you fuckin’ with a Hornets’ nest

Old shooters in the corner like Hornacek

Young boys that be handling the rock

Chris Paul, dish off, hammer in the sock"

Bonsonlini with a hockey assist here with the Hornets reference. Jeff Hornacek was one of the better outside shooters in NBA history. John Stockton would penetrate and if Karl Malone was not open he'd kick it to Jeff and indeed would snipe you with the corner three-point shot. "Old" is used well here as Hornacek played in the league for 14 years. Chris Paul is a combo guard however is an excellent distributor of the ball.

Homeboy on governmental cover-ups, racism and civilian casualties.

Come Back Like Jordan Wearin the 4-5 - Big L

Big L

Deadly Combination
The Big Picture

"With more game than Ron Harper

The bomb sparker
Rapper slash armed robber"

He averaged 23 points per game  yet many remember Ron Harper as the steady defensive lead guard for some of the Bulls championships. Previously he was one of the best all-around players in the NBA. He and Jordan used to go at it. A.C.L injuries are common to return from now, but during his era they were more serious. Knee injuries changed his game for ever.

L's description is understated.
